Basil the Great Mouse Detective

In take two we return to our Disney perspective for the fifth time, this time it’s the 1980s. The films we planned to cover where The Rescuers, The Rescuers Down Under, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company. Sadly we didn’t get around to discussing the wondrous Rescuers Down Under; we got a bit breathless in our praise of certain movies. We took too much time looking at Basil the great mouse detective a brilliant example of an underappreciated Disney feature. Also we got bogged down in detail, like Gurgy of the Black Cauldron, he’s a dog with man hands, what’s going on there? Worry not; we’ll look at The Rescuers Down Under when we reconvene with part 1 of 2 of Disney features in the 1990s.

It was mixed news for the new reviews this week, with two very different films. First up was the new comedy vehicle for Sacha Baron Cohen, which both Mark and Rob enjoyed but they couldn’t get past the mass of problems the films satire posed. On the other hand we reviewed the raid which not only exceeded the hefty hype it kicked any doubter’s right in the face. That’s the raid, a magnificently violent martial arts extravaganza which the world has not seen since the golden age of John Woo.
